A nature reserve and gypsum karst landscape define the scenery along the circular hiking trails around Bad Sachsa

The village community center in the Neuhof district is a good starting point for these loop hiking trails. Of course, you can also start at other locations, such as the town center of Bad Sachsa. Connections to the towns of Walkenried, Tettenborn and Steina as well as to the neighboring Thuringian countryside are signposted at many locations. The South Harz Karst Trail runs right through the Bad Sachsa hiking area. This stretch is arguably one of the most beautiful on the 265-kilometer Karst Hiking Trail from Bad Grund to Pölsfeld/Sangerhausen.

The circular walk takes you on a route of around 2 km around and through the three interconnected ponds. Along the way, you will come across the Priesterstein nature reserve and a historic gypsum kiln.

Walk along the Panorama Trail
The 4.5 km-long panoramic trail winds its way around Bad Sachsa and rewards walkers with stunning views. From various points along the route, you can enjoy views of the Kranichstein hills and the striking Sachsenstein. A varied circular walk for anyone who wants to enjoy nature and panoramic views.

Gypsum, gravel and copper slate quarries
Seven Quarries Walking Tour
Over a distance of around 10 kilometres, you’ll gain fascinating insights into the history and natural environment of the Southern Harz. The trail takes you past former gypsum, gravel and copper-slate quarries, providing a striking illustration of how nature and the landscape evolve. Highlights include the Pfaffenholzschwinde natural monument, reclamation areas at the Kranichstein gypsum quarry, the Heidergott gravel pit with gravel dating from the Ice Age, and the disused Lohof quarry, which nature has now reclaimed. At the Kuhberg quarry, you’ll be impressed by a striking mountain massif formed by an Ice Age valley.

All about the geology of the Southern Harz

On this nature trail, which is approximately 4 km long, you’ll learn lots of interesting facts about the geology of one of the most beautiful valleys in the Southern Harz as you walk. You’ll walk past dry meadows, near-natural streams and pond landscapes that coexist in harmony with agriculture and near-natural forestry. Information boards describe the animal and plant species native to the Southern Harz. The trail is easy to walk and is also suitable for families with pushchairs or older people.

Gypsum, gravel and copper slate quarries
5-Hut Tour
This 14-kilometre circular walk takes in five mountain huts, which are maintained by the Bad Sachsa Harz Club. The walk starts at the clubhouse in Pfaffenwiese. From there, the route leads past the Richtstieghütte and Stephanhütte up to the Ravensberg at 660 metres. You then continue on to the Käthe-Schulkenhütte and the Phillipsgrußhütte, before the route leads back via Jägerfleck, the Kantorhütte and through the idyllic Kuckanstal.
