Harz Falconry Center in Bad Sachsa

A visit to the Harzfalkenhof is an experience for the whole family! The Harzfalkenhof is located on the Katzenstein near Bad Sachsa, a foothill of the Ravensberg. At the Harzfalkenhof, you can see eagles, falcons, and other birds of prey up close during flight demonstrations, which take place when the weather is nice.

Snow Eagle Breeding at the Bad Sachsa Bird Park

At the Bad Sachsa Bird Park, the Harzfalkenhof also runs a snow vulture breeding program. These rare birds, which can live up to 100 years, are native to the Himalayan mountains at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 4,000 meters. This Asian vulture species has a wingspan of about three meters, weighs between eight and 15 kilograms, and is a scavenger. Its plumage ranges from light brown to white, and its distinctive feature is the neck ruff of the same color. Rearing snow vultures is complicated. The birds do not reach sexual maturity until they are five to six years old. When the female lays an egg—which does not happen every year—the incubation period lasts 60 days. In addition, the birds are very selective when choosing a mate. The Harzfalkenhof in Bad Sachsa is only able to successfully breed snow vultures because the staff create optimal living conditions for these rare birds in the aviary’s enclosures.
